1872 River House a Gentle Address on the Douro

We received a warm welcome that immediately set the tone. Carolina opened the door with a bounce and a smile that captured the essence of the hotel.  1872 River House occupies a converted mansion by the river, intimate and filled with light, joy, and life!

Portugal, especially Lisbon, has become increasingly popular lately, with many celebrities happily choosing Lisbon as their home, but Porto maintains a quieter status.  Porto is Portugal's second city, a smaller city that encourages strolls along the Douro River and taking time for oneself.

The hotel is ideally located in the heart of exploration, yet it remains intimate and secluded. It offers eight dollhouse rooms; four facing a narrow, time-worn alley (1-3-5-7), and four overlooking the River Douro (2-4-6-8). Rooms 2, 4, and 6 have particularly lovely views through large windows, with rooms 2 and 4 extending onto small terraces that sit right above the water.

Any of the rooms will give you easy access to all of Porto, from both sides of the waterfront and the historic centre, all best explored on foot. Breakfast was lovely and, like everything, served with joy! :)

A last tip: Finding the hotel for the first time can be a little tricky.  It is not in an area easily accessible by car. If you are in a rental, consider parking on a main street up on the hill, then taking a taxi to the hotel!

For those seeking an escape beyond the city, spending a night or two at Pedras Salgadas Nature Park complements a stay here beautifully; the treehouse architecture is captivating.
