Café Diglas in Vienna

Just a few steps behind St. Stephen’s Cathedral, yet sufficiently removed from the constant flow of visitors circling the square, Café Diglas offers a gentler rhythm of Vienna’s coffeehouse scene.

Inside, the atmosphere is quietly reassuring.  Wood-panelled walls, mirrors softened by age, and small marble-topped tables create an inviting setting that invites staying awhile.  This is a café that sees the Viennese tradition not as performative but as habitual; a place to sit, read, think, and slowly work through coffee and cake.

The pastry counter alone can stop you in your tracks.  Rows of tortes, strudels, and cream-filled classics make choosing genuinely difficult.  Sachertorte sits alongside lighter seasonal cakes, while Apfelstrudel arrives warm, delicately layered, and best enjoyed without rushing.  Pair anything with a Melange or an Einspänner — a traditional Viennese coffee drink consisting of a shot of espresso topped with a generous layer of cold whipped cream — and you’re exactly where you should be.

Café Diglas may not rely on grand historical narratives or architectural awe, but it offers something just as valuable: a refuge and a sense of continuity.  A continuation of Vienna’s coffeehouse culture, about the simple pleasure of sitting well, eating something sweet, and letting the city move around you rather than through you.
