Café-Restaurant Corbaci in Vienna

Set within one of the original wings of Vienna’s imperial stables, Café-Restaurant Corbaci occupies a quietly striking architectural space.  Formerly known as Café-Restaurant Una, the venue was reimagined by architects Anne Lacaton and Jean-Philippe Vassal, with a focus on clarity and functionality over decoration.

The first thing you notice is the ceiling; high, vaulted, and rhythmically ordered, it is clad in an intricate pattern of oriental tiles designed by Asiye Kolbai-Kafalier, a Vienna-based Turkish artist.  The effect is subtle rather than ornate; a repeating geometry that draws the eye upward.

Corbaci may not be the place you settle into for hours with a book and cake, but it is absolutely worth visiting.  It’s a café where architecture leads the experience.
