Coqui Coqui Tulum a True Barefoot Luxury Icon

Along the narrow Boca Paila beach road south of Tulum,  Coqui Coqui was one of the original hotels that defined the area long before the name became widely recognised in design and travel circles.  Even now, it remains one of our favourite hotels anywhere.  Effortlessly beautiful, serene and completely unforced, it sits on perfect white sand facing the crystalline Caribbean Sea, gently perfumed with copal.  Quietly spectacular, and still remarkably hard to top.

More than just a hotel, Coqui Coqui played an unintentional formative role in shaping the aesthetic of modern Tulum.  The restrained colour palette, the barefoot elegance, the sense of calm intimacy — all of it was later echoed up and down the coast.  Here, however, it feels authentic rather than styled for effect.

Backstory

Years ago, Argentinian model Nico Million found himself on what was then a largely undeveloped stretch of the Boca Paila road.  He fell in love with the light, the air, the vegetation, and the pace and decided to stay.  His first venture was Coqui Coqui Perfumería, created as both a laboratory and a showcase for his fragrance line.

Rumour has it that the perfumes were inspired by Million's visit to a library in Mérida, where he came across a colonial-era manuscript describing scent formulas created by Franciscan monks using local flowers, once sent back to the Queen of Spain.  Whether legend or fact, the fragrances feel rooted, historical, and subtly sensual.

Soon after, Nico was joined by Francesca Bonato, an Italian accessories designer.  Together, they shaped the wider Coqui Coqui world — a subdued, earthy aesthetic that found its natural home in both the hotels and the perfumery themselves.

Hotel

Coqui Coqui is less a hotel than a complete sensory experience — an exclusive hideaway where nothing feels excessive, and everything feels intentional.  At check-in, guests are greeted with a silk beach bag filled with Coqui Coqui amenities: orange blossom bath oil, tobacco cologne, and what remains our all-time favourite mosquito repellent — a citronella cologne that actually works and smells extraordinary.  Even if you never stay, many of these products are available online.

Architecturally, the building subtly echoes nearby Maya pyramids, constructed using traditional techniques and natural materials: stone, wood and thatch, creating a structure that feels both ancient and modern.  The perfumería sits near reception, gently scenting the air and anchoring the identity of the entire property.

The rooms, located in the rear building, are spacious and beautifully put together.  Each offers a partial ocean view and interiors defined by obsidian-toned velvet drapes and cushions, unpolished wood, stucco walls, and polished concrete floors.  Large windows invite constant Caribbean breezes — there is no air conditioning, and none is needed.  The colour palette is neutral and earthy, dominated by pure cottons and natural textures.

One of the most distinctive design touches is the way handmade hammocks are used as decorative elements.  Francesca Bonato reimagined traditional crochet hammocks in unexpected colours and materials,  including metallic fibres and deep black dyes, transforming them into unexpected sculptural objects.

We’ve stayed twice in the Jungle Suite, once during a major storm.  While we’d hoped for sunshine, the rain, coupled with a few mezcal margaritas, created one of the most atmospheric and romantic afternoons.  On our most recent visit, we stayed in the Mirador Suite on the top floor — formerly the spa — and found it just as delightful.

The Mexican service is warm and thoughtful, with special thanks to Pepo and Mutsi (hola!).  The reservation process can be a little uneven, but a little perseverance is well rewarded.
Coqui Coqui is the rare hotel that balances design, nature and barefoot luxury so perfectly that you never question any of it.  You simply arrive, exhale and realise you are exactly where you want to be.

Sadly, the hotel has now permanently closed.  But for those who were lucky enough to experience it, the memory still glows.
