El Tábano, a Garden Kitchen in Tulum

El Tábano sits at the top of many foodie lists for Tulum, and for good reason.  We arrived with high expectations and slipped through the driftwood gate into a leafy open garden dotted with rustic tables, all set to a perfect soundtrack.   Within minutes, it was clear this is one of the best places for food in Tulum, and owners Paf and Laura deserve every word of praise sent their way.

The menu is handwritten with chalk on large blackboards near the entrance, changing constantly throughout the day as ingredients run out, a clear sign of both freshness and popularity.   Arriving early is a wise move.  Prices are reasonable, and many of the ingredients are organic.   The kitchen is accommodating and happily adapts dishes to suit dietary preferences.

On our first visit, we began with a cold tomato and papaya gazpacho — wonderfully refreshing, cool, sweet, and absolutely ideal for a hot afternoon.  From there, plates arrived steadily: fresh guacamole salad, organic bean salad, huitlacoche crêpes, and a chile ancho filled with shrimp and nuts.

Each dish arrived with its own fragrant flavour profile, as food in Mexico often does.  The fish tacos were very good, but not quite as memorable as the real highlight: the hot pepper salsa, made to order so fresh that the tomatillos and chiles were still warm from the stove when it reached the table.

In the evenings, remember you’re dining in a garden: mosquitoes come out with enthusiasm.   Long trousers, closed shoes or a splash of bug spray will spare you the fuss.  We forgot the first time, but our waiter appeared quickly to the rescue with a solution — emblematic of the staff’s relaxed, friendly, genuinely helpful attitude.  They’re happy to chat about ingredients and dishes, and the vibe remains unhurried.

A gentle reminder for visitors: you’re in the Caribbean and most likely on holiday.  The pace is slower here — enjoy it.  El Tábano is one of those rare places where good food, good people, and good energy come together so naturally that you find yourself planning a return visit before the meal is even over.  And if you’re tempted, you can even take a little of the place home with you; their fragrant local Yucatán honey is sold on site.
