Hotel Agua Barú — A Private World Above the Caribbean
Stepping into Suite No. 1 at Hotel Agua Barú feels like crossing into a different register of time. The outside world falls away. Space expands. Clothes become optional, then irrelevant. The entire property was conceived by interior designer Gustavo Pinto.
Getting here is part of the seduction. Leaving Cartagena’s bay, you pass old Spanish guard towers with their ancient chain winches, and beyond miles of mangroves before the Caribbean opens wide. You can arrive by public boat, or do it properly in a powerboat, cutting across the blue waters with the sun high, the wind sharp against your hair and the world slipping past. It is not inexpensive, and it is not meant to be.
Yes, you can leave the room — but why bother leaving at all? The bedroom and veranda overlook an uninterrupted expanse of Caribbean sea, with the view stretching down the hillside towards the horizon. Reaching the cabaña involves a ten-minute climb up a wooden staircase winding through a garden, which only heightens the sense of arrival. The private infinity pool is ever-refreshing and remains hidden from view. As the sun warms your bare skin, you'll find yourself slipping into the water again and again.
Should you feel the urge for saltwater, the Agua Baru offers complimentary boat trips to a nearby beach across the bay. There, you can swim in the crystalline waters, though shared with guests from other hotels and the ever-present beach vendors. The hotel boat can also be hired for island hopping or a visit to the town of Barú, though most guests seem content to stay afloat above the sea.
If there's any aspect of the experience that could be improved, it might be the restaurant. It's pretty much your only choice, and the restaurant requires menu selection in advance since ingredients arrive by boat alongside you. The quality isn't top-notch, but the room service breakfast is a lovely and generous continental spread; for lunch and dinner, local seafood and ceviches are the safest and most satisfying choices.
The dining room itself is beautifully constructed from bamboo and woven palm. It reflects Pinto’s understated tropical chic style. Yet it is the act of dining barefoot in a robe, overlooking nothing but water and sky, that defines the experience.
Suite No. 1 is the obvious choice. It provides the utmost privacy, superior elevation, and a concealed seating area at the very top, offering a complete 360-degree view of the surrounding islands. It is less a hotel room than a vantage point. A space designed to detach you, quietly and completely, from everything else.
