Hotel Lupaia, a Tuscan Retreat near Montepulciano
Tucked into the rolling hills of the Val d’Orcia, facing the town of Montepulciano, Hotel Lupaia lies quietly among olive groves and cypress trees. It is well hidden, reached by a winding lane that feels increasingly removed from the modern world.
This is the Tuscany many picture — but seldom encounter. Think Diane Lane's house in Under the Tuscan Sun.
Set within a restored 17th-century farmhouse, Lupaia balances rustic authenticity with careful refinement. Stone walls hold the day’s warmth. Terracotta paths curve through gardens heavy with rosemary and lavender. Everywhere you look, feels just right.
Service begins long before arrival, whether you book directly or through an agent. Shortly after booking, we received a thoughtful email suggesting scenic routes and lesser-known stops for our drive through Tuscany. The recommendations were precise and personal. They shaped our journey even before we arrived.
The final approach winds through hills lined with hand-painted signs. At the top, a glass of local wine awaits — and here, local truly means Montepulciano. The welcome is warm without ceremony. A gentle tour of the gardens follows, as though you are being shown someone’s home rather than a hotel.
The staff move with quiet attentiveness, always mindful of your well-being. In the restaurant, in the gardens, by the pool, care is present but never hovering.
Owners Heidi and Christopher Müller have mastered the Tuscan hotel fantasy. Making it feel intimate rather than theatrical. Each room is unique, blending old beams, linen textures, and soft natural light. Comfort is taken seriously. The beds are exceptional, so much so that we extended our stay. In our second room, a private Turkish bath waited. After days of exploring hill towns and vineyards, returning to warm steam and quiet stone felt restorative in the truest sense. It shifted the rhythm of the trip.
The restaurant reflects the same care. Breakfast is generous and delicious. Dinner offers seasonal and thoughtfully prepared dishes. Dietary needs are considered, but it is wise to inform the staff in advance. For dinner at Lupaia, booking in advance is advisable because it is discreetly popular with locals. Remember, dinner is served as a generous three-course menu, so if you prefer a lighter meal, it is sensible to specify this when making your reservation for smaller options.
In a region filled with hotels promising Tuscan charm, Lupaia simply holds its ground. You arrive seeking an image. You leave reluctant to go
