If Dogs Run Free Cocktail Bar

Walking along Gumpendorfer Strasse on a late, breezy afternoon, we stopped at a dim doorway and exchanged a startling gaze.  A monster looked back.

What was the original purpose of this space? Was it a gallery, a curiosity shop, a private joke, or a kink museum?  The answer, happily, was none of the above.  If Dogs Run functions as a stylish cocktail bar, designed by co-owners Tzou Lubroth Architects and named after Bob Dylan's track "If Dogs Run Free," the space combines playful visuals with industrial surfaces.  It feels dark yet light, curious without becoming gimmicky.

Drinks arrive in elegant crystal vessels, carefully mixed and garnished with confidence rather than excess.  In the afternoon, it can be a refuge, a place to sit, decompress, and let the city soften around you.  Rumour has it that on weekends, it shifts to a more livelyatmosphere.  We have not tested that rumour yet, but judging by the setting, it is easy to imagine the room adopting a different rhythm after dark.

Perfectly placed across from Café Sperl  and just a few blocks from  Saint Charles Apotheke, If Dogs Run Free fits naturally into an unhurried afternoon of wandering Gumpendorfer Strasse.  A stop that feels discovered rather than planned.
