La Esquina del Pandebono, Cartagena’s Morning Rescue

On the corner of Calle San Agustín and Calle de la Universidad, just a short walk from the city walls, is La Frutera or La Esquina del Pandebono, a small juice bar and bakery that is always busy and firmly part of the daily rhythm of the nearby Universidad de Cartagena.  Students drift in and out; regulars greet the staff by name; trays emerge from the oven in an almost continuous loop.

It is best encountered at the hour when the city is beginning to gather itself.  Doors open early, greeted by the consistently cheerful staff.  The first thing you notice is the aroma — warm cheese, baked cassava, sweet pastry — drifting onto the street before you even reach the counter.  The counter quickly fills with tall pitchers of fresh fruit juices that glisten in the morning light, from pale guanabana to vivid mora and guava, or combinations such as lulo-banana and mango-passionfruit—anything you wish to order.

Colombian palates tend to favour very sweet drinks, so if that is not your preference, simply request your juice without added sweeteners.  The staff are used to it.

Alongside the juices, metal trays are loaded with freshly baked pastries straight from the large oven, still warm and fragrant, offered at prices that clearly seem meant for students rather than tourists.   Naturally, you find yourself ordering a treat or two without a second thought.

Start with a pastel de queso, a buttery cheese puff that shatters delicately as you bite into it, or opt for the richer Colombian favourite, Pastel Gloria, where guava jam or dulce de leche and cheese are folded into pastry that is simultaneously sweet, savoury, sticky, and indulgent.  There are also pan de yuca and pan de bono, soft cheese buns made with yuca (cassava) flour, each bite gently chewy and deeply comforting.

If you’re lucky and the timing is right, you might catch a batch of almojábanas just as they leave the oven.  Little golden, round breads made with cornflour and cuajada — fresh farmer’s cheese — they rise beautifully as they bake, crisping on the outside while remaining airy and slightly tangy within.  You tear one open while it is still steaming.  Another Colombian classic, and very hard to stop at one.

La Esquina del Pandebono has extended opening hours, providing a peaceful escape after a long night or an early morning. A cosy corner of Cartagena where the day always feels like it is just beginning.
