Santa Caterina Market, Barcelona

Santa Caterina Market is Barcelona’s oldest covered food market and remains very much in use; it was first built in 1865 on the site of the former Convent of Santa Caterina.  In 2005, the market was reimagined by Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue, transforming it into a contemporary structure topped by a large, undulating roof of mosaic tiles.  The roof ripples with colour and movement, reflecting the produce below and giving the building a sense of lightness that feels distinctly Barcelona.

We often favour Santa Caterina over the well-known and heavily touristy La Boqueria.  It’s more peaceful, authentic, and locally vibrant.  Instead of crowds of tour groups passing by juice stalls, you’ll see residents shopping with baskets, chefs examining the fish counters, and vendors who seem familiar with their regular customers.

The offerings are quintessentially Cataluña; seafood reigns supreme, displayed in all its glorious variety—glistening fish, shellfish piled high, and cuts prepared with confidence and pride.  There are also excellent fruit and vegetable stalls, charcuterie, cheeses, and pantry essentials.

If you’re fortunate to have a kitchen while in Barcelona, Santa Caterina is the perfect place to stock up.  Even if you’re not cooking, it’s worth visiting just to observe the rhythms of daily life.   A lively market, beautifully renewed, and still doing exactly what it was built to do.
