Corabastos is the largest wholesale produce market in Colombia and, quite possibly, the biggest we’ve encountered anywhere. Sprawling across roughly 420,000 sq. metres, it houses 57 warehouses and more than 6,500 vendors, moving an astonishing 12,400 tonnes of food every single day. The figures are impressive; the reality is overwhelming. Walking through it, you can’t help but wonder how hunger exists at all. The sheer abundance is staggering. At first, it’s almost too much to take in.

The best time to visit is early, around 7:00 am, when the market is fully alive and operating at peak rhythm. By then, the light remains soft, but the movement is already relentless. Forklifts glide past mountains of citrus. Porters bend under crates of mangoes and papayas. Porters weaving between stacks of produce, voices rising above the scrape of pallets. Corabastos is very much a working market, not a tourist attraction. It’s wise to go with a local who understands the flow and etiquette of the place. Dressing modestly to avoid drawing unwanted attention, keeping valuables close, and stowing your camera when not in use are recommended. There are occasional pickpockets, as there are in any place of this scale and intensity.

If you’re planning to buy anything, remember this is a wholesale market. Produce is sold in crates or boxes, and hiring a porter for a small fee is both normal and highly practical. Watching the choreography is part of the experience. Forklifts, hand carts and human chains keep the food moving with impressive efficiency.

For committed market lovers, Corabastos is absolutely worth the journey. The scale, the smells, the colours and the noise create something unlike anywhere else. Just imagine a hall the size of an aircraft hangar filled with carrots stacked three metres high — then multiply it. Situated on the outskirts of Bogotá, about an hour from the city centre, it feels less like a market and more like a landscape made of food.
