Bar Cañete, Barcelona a Raval Institution

On a small street in the Raval neighbourhood, Bar Cañete epitomises everything a great Catalan tapas bar should be.  Lively, confident, and closely tied to its local community.  It was highly recommended by a local industry insider, and from the moment you step inside, it’s clear why it’s regarded as an institution.

The room buzzes with energy, a well-drilled kitchen brigade moves with purpose, and servers and waiters glide through the space.  Displays of produce on the side of the bar and prepared dishes passing by catch the eye, and the sommeliers are ready, charming and genuinely helpful.  It’s worth noting that this is the tapas bar, not the more formal Cañete Restaurant next door, where reservations are essential (we didn’t plan ahead).  Here, things are more immediate and convivial.

The food and atmosphere were so good that we visited three times during our brief stay in Barcelona (and revisited on subsequent trips).  Some dishes impressed enough to be ordered them again on each visit.  Chief among them was the coca con tomate, a thin, toasted sourdough bread rubbed generously with ripe tomato and coated with olive oil, simple, perfect, and second only to the version we had at L’Eggs during our trip.

Other standouts included a superb salmorejo Cordobés, a more indulgent cousin to gazpacho—thicker, richer, silkier, and intensely flavoured. The bogavante (lobster) croquette, with its perfectly crisp, thin shell and molten interior, is unapologetically luxurious.  The same goes for the buñuelo de bacalao (cod).  The grilled artichokes with romesco delivered exactly what you hope for: smoky edges, tender hearts, and an intense almond and bell pepper sauce with enough depth to order seconds.

Seafood shines here. Zamburiñas, those small, sweet scallops, were simply and beautifully prepared.  The fricandó de rap amb bolets, monkfish stewed with mushrooms, was also deeply comforting and beautifully balanced.  And then came the favourite, a grilled calamari sandwich with aioli, which was messy in the best way and should be cloned in every bar worldwide.
Overall, this is a place well worth seeking out: classic without feeling stuck, without attitude, and the best example of what a Barcelona tapas bar can be.
