Cuines Santa Caterina, Market Restaurant in Barcelona

Inside Santa Caterina Market, one of Barcelona’s top food markets, you’ll find Cuines Santa Caterina.  At first glance, it might seem a bit touristy, but that impression quickly fades — it is a restaurant serving honest food, with outdoor tables that blend into the market’s lively atmosphere and a variety of seating options, from traditional tables to smart dining bars, beautifully designed by Sandra Tarruella Interioristas.

When planning our trip, we selected our dates during calçot season, which usually runs from November to April and is one of the delights of the Catalan countryside.  Finding calçots here, at the very end of the harvest, felt like a small gift.

Calçots are a variety of spring onion native to Catalunya.  They are grilled fiercely over open flames until the outer layers blacken, then wrapped in newspaper to steam before being served on inverted terracotta tiles.  You peel away the charred skin, dip the tender heart generously into romesco sauce, tilt your head back, and embrace the mess. It’s communal, tactile, and profoundly satisfying.
