El Bazar del Sábado — Artisans in Motion, San Ángel
On Saturdays, San Ángel awakens to the buzz on the cobblestones around Plaza San Jacinto and El Bazar del Sábado. By mid-morning, this artisan market, a popular weekend destination, gathers momentum.
The official bazaar, which has been running since 1960, occupies a restored colonial house centred on a spacious interior patio. Music drifts from the restaurant at its heart. A well-loved quesadilla stand works steadily, emitting the aroma of masa and melted cheese. Around the courtyard, small booths display ceramics, hand-stitched textiles, blown glass, silver jewellery, carved wood, lacquered gourds, and much more. Each table is an expression of Mexico’s rich artisanal vocabulary.
But the bazaar does not end at the courtyard walls. Across the street, artists line the pavement at Plaza San Jacinto, with canvases propped against wrought-iron railings. Around the corner, temporary tents occupy another open square, hosting smaller makers — ceramics, jewellery, embroidered blouses carefully stacked. And then, if you wander a little further, you'll find galleries and specialised shops showcasing the country's most renowned and award-winning master artisans, offering exceptional pieces. You can notice the standard shifts noticeably as well as the pricing.
The area itself contributes to the pleasure: cobblestone streets, colonial façades washed in ochre and rose, bougainvillaea spilling over balconies, the rhythm of footsteps on stone. Even if you buy nothing, although you probably should, you leave having experienced some of Mexico’s material imagination, especially for visitors who aren't exploring other parts of the country.
Plan your day: A five-minute taxi ride takes you to Frida Kahlo’s Casa Azul, where cobalt walls enclose the artist’s intimate world. For architecture enthusiasts, the Cineteca Nacional de México presents a striking example of contemporary design. Slightly further afield, yet still within easy reach, are the Diego Rivera Anahuacalli Museum and the campus of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, both notable for their monumental murals and their influence on the country’s visual identity.
